Obituary for John A. Brand

John A. Brand
Mr. John A. Brand of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the age of 94. He was born March 14, 1924 in Clover Bend, Arkansas, the son of William Jeff and Gracie Elizabeth Huskey Brand.

On April 12, 1946, the bigger than life team of John and Etta Brand began. Together they raised three sons, and over the next seventy-four years, watched their family grow to include three daughters-in-law, eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Brand was a United States Navy veteran, serving during World War II. His military duty lasted from December 1942 until January 1946, during which time he served as a radio operator onboard the USS Escambia. Mr. Brand was owner and operator of John Brand Auto Body Repair 25 years, retiring in 1980.

He was a good man, husband, father, and grandfather. Above all else, his family came first, and he could be counted on to be there for them. Mr. Brand enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and playing golf. He had a great sense of humor, and loved a good joke.

Mr. Brand was a current member of the First United Methodist Church. He was previously a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon and on the board.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jeff Leroy Brand; four sisters, Thelma Smithee, Audrey Gilbert, Ruby Nell Adams, and Velma Hartwick; and his parents.

Mr. Brand is survived by his wife of 74 years, Etta Brand of the home; three sons, Rodney Brand and wife, Kathryn of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Rodger Brand and wife, Carol, of Newport, and Mike Brand and wife, Kay, of Newport; one sister, Lamelda Grace Fortenberry of Tuckerman; eight grandchildren, Nan Elizabeth Means, Alicia Battershell, John William Brand, Mary Kathryn Brand, Beth Ouellette, Dr. John C. Brand, Michael Taylor Brand, and Michelle Catherine Foshee; eleven great-grandchildren, Chris Branham, Roe Battershell, Sammy Battershell, Celia Battershell, Grace Ouellette, Luke Ouellette, Owen Brand, Logan Brand, Michael Brand, Bliss Catherine Foshee, and Ella Faith Foshee.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are his grandsons and grandsons-in-law, John William Brand, Dr. John C. Brand, Michael Taylor Brand, Luke Ouellette, Justin Foshee, Mike Battershell, and Scott Means.
