Jessie Dunavin Jr.
Mr. Jessie Dunavin, Jr., of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at the age of 73. He was born July 9, 1944 in Newport, the son of Jessie and Thelma (Winemiller) Dunavin.
Jessie was a 1962 graduate of Newport High School. He worked many years at Victor Metal before opening North End Video at Tuckerman. Jessie later owned Sportsmans Pawn Shop in Jonesboro prior to returning to Newport. After he retired, he spent many hours rebuilding and selling lawn mowers.
Jessie enjoyed tinkering with anything motorized, and could fix or build most anything. He had a talent for constructing things, once building an entire library wall in his daughter’s bedroom. He spent his younger years in construction, and was skilled in renovation.
His goal in life was to be a good father, and his children agree that he was more than successful. Jessie could gently wipe away a tear and offer comfort, and he could also be a strict disciplinarian. He was strong, both in body and in character. Even as cancer ravaged his body, he never complained and asked only that his children and grandchildren bond together and find strength in one another. He was a giant of a man, who loved with all his heart and soul, and will be forever missed.
Jessie was preceded in death by his father, Jessie Dunavin, Sr.
He is survived by his children, Karen Raibley and husband, Mike, of Tuckerman, and David Dunavin of Newport; his grandchildren, Logan, Ethan, and Corey Hunt; his mother, Thelma Dunavin of Newport; two sisters, Barbara Foster and husband, Bob, of Newport, and Holly Dunavin of Little Rock; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a lifetime of friends.
Friends may visit at the funeral home, Friday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Bernard's Cancer Center, Dr. Amir Farooq, Callie Poole, APRN, and Dierksen Hospice for their loving care of Jessie.
