Obituary for O. M. "Bernie" Burnham
Mr. Oscar Burnham of Swifton, Arkansas, departed this life on Friday, January 5, 2018, at the age of 94. He was born July 10, 1923 at Willow Springs, MO., the son of Virgil and Mabel Burnham.
Our Father was a hardworking man of many diverse talents, he worked in the aircraft industry, housing, and concrete construction, and management. He was a master mechanic and enjoyed working on his and others vehicles. He liked helping others and enjoyed his morning coffee group. Our Father was a WW2 combat veteran and served in the 3rd Army as a T5 antitank gunner and tank operator (driver, gunner, and mechanic) in 5 major battles, receiving a bronze star and purple heart with 2 oak leaves and a good conduct medal. He worked in his shop making various wood working items; his most valuable is a whale stamp holder. In his later years he worked in his garden, making his own compost and canning and cooking. Those who knew him had many stories and memories about the boy, and the man Oscar Burnham, our Father.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Syble (Barker) Vaughn Burnham on September 6, 2017; his former spouse, Audrey E. Justus; five sisters, Mae “Pat” Bunch, Dorothy Carley, Millie Anderson, Eleanor Reef, and Bobbie Carpenter; and two brothers, Ollie Burnham and Donald Burnham.
Mr. Burnham is survived by his children, Randall J. Burnham and wife, Dottie, of Wichita, Kansas, Gregory A. Burnham and wife, Carol, of Wichita, KS, and Deborah K. Snetzer and husband, Fred, of Newport; stepchildren, Brenda Hunt of Walnut Ridge, Diane Vaughn of Walnut Ridge, Laura Weatherford and husband, Roy of Port Neches, Texas, and two sisters, Dollie Sparnoft of Wichita, KS and Jerry Johnson of Batesville; grandchildren, Katlyn Snetzer, Angelique Burnham, and James Burnham; step grandchildren, Christopher Vaughn, Adam Hunt, Paige VanBrook, Brande Davis, and Joe Allen Vaugh; many great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Jackson’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Swifton Cemetery. Friends may visit at the funeral home Tuesday 9:30 until service time.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be Randall Burnham, Gregory Burnham, Fred Snetzer, Jason Steimel, Chris Vaughn, Perry Mitts, Mitch Worthington, and Gary Worthington. Honorary pallbearers will be Rusty’s Coffee Drinkers.
